Hawaii
In-flight meals on United remain terrible, the flight was almost completely full, but at least I didn't have to pay for the sad cheese omelet and potatoes? Arrival at the Diamond Head concourse at HNL airport was met by a JAL 787-9 as well as a Korean Air widebody, plus a pair of Omni Air 767-300ER's hiding in the distance, so at least Hawaii is popular?
The Renaissance Honolulu is brand-new, just opened in February 2024, and is consequently new and shiny and quite comfortable inside. Right across the street from Ala Moana Center means it's a bit out of Waikiki, but it was convenient to the convention center and quite restaurants, so overall still a good location. Although all the rideshare drivers complained how bad their driveway setup is, which seemed an odd oversight for such a new hotel.
Then off to the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting all afternoon. Smaller crowd than usual (I think only 4,500 vs 9,000 attendees normally?) but still some good sessions over the week. Caught up with Dr. Abinash Bhattachan over dinner at Doraku Sushi in Waikiki, which had generous portions in addition to being pretty tasty, despite being in the heart of the tourist trap.
