South Africa and Namibia: September 2018
A beautiful sunny day, begun with an hour on the beach photographing the waves in Camps Bay, just south of Cape Town. Sam might have gotten a little carried way, but considering the whole point of the trip was vacation and photography, no one was complaining! Another quick stop in Hout Bay, then down to the Cape of Good Hope. Cape Point Lighthouse rests atop the highest rocky outcrop with a magnificent view, with the old lighthouse several hundred feet lower and further to the southeast. The hike from Cape Point to Cape of Good Hope is surprisingly quick and flat-- very pleasant.
The rocky prominence that is the Cape of Good Hope actually doesn't have quite the view that Cape Point does, but still, to be at the traditional point where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, the southwestern-most point, has both historic and navigational significance. After you take in the view after walking up to the Cape Point lighthouse, the reverse angle (looking north), with the Atlantic Ocean to the left and Indian Ocean to the right, is just as striking.
Next stop was Boulders Beach for the penguins! The tourist section of the beach was closed, but turns out they are everywhere once you get to the beach. They're loud and aggressive-- don't get too close!
Return to Cape Town was via the east coast rather than the west, then traditional South African braai (barbeque) for dinner at The Backyard Grill in Sea Point. A massive amount of pork ribs, pork, sirloin, chicken, and boerewors (sausage) for dinner, plus some very, very tasty corn and portabello mushrooms. Traditonalists might argue braai in a restaurant isn't authentic, but this was the best we could do...
