Xinjiang BBQ
Long-overdue catch up with Rebecca over an early dinner at Xinjiang BBQ. With the explosion of skewer places recently, not sure how I found this one. They're a weird karaoke room vibe inside instead of just straight Chinese skewers, random neon signs in front, and they don't grill table-side, instead cooking everything in the kitchen to "warm" on those dumb candle-under-tray things.
Overall was very meh, with beef, pork, and gizzard skewers being okay. Chicken hearts and gluten skewers were both disappointing, and it's hard to get too excited about potato. The lamb porridge was very plain but grew on you, especially if you had the eggplant and the oysters, both of which were much more strongly seasoned than the porridge. Add in some cucumbers and it was an acceptable meal if you ignored the gluten and the chicken hearts.
Fanhua Blossom is one of the newer milk tea places that tried to be social media attractive. Their drinks are quite good and the staff put in extra effort, plus they have ample seating and board games. The result is a very decent place to hang out, but a place that also doesn't quite hit it out of the park with the influencer crowd. Not for the lack of trying, but something about the space lacks in execution.
