Five Star Seafood
Five Star Seafood moved across the street, from the fading glory of Focus Plaza, into the Hilton San Gabriel. While a restaurant inside of a hotel has been done many times before, a restaurant outright taking over a ballroom (or two) of a hotel is definitely odd, especially since this seems to be a long-term relocation.
Food is still good, some items are pretty solid, some are okay, not too many are meh... so like the better of many OG places in 626, Five Star Seafood seems to stick around by being average to very good at almost everything, as opposed to having any real stand-outs or any serious fails. The Hilton San Gabriel has plenty of parking, so you don't have to fight crowds of Asian drivers while trying to get your dim sum fix-- this is a double-plus given how good the location is, convenient to several other very centrally located strip malls full of tasty places, including one of Sue's favorites, ici Tea for milk teas and fruit teas.
Managed board games the rest of the afternoon, with Sue's deck-building mastery on full display in Terraforming: Mars.
Then, dinner at a long-forgotten spot, Gloria's Cafe. Quite solid for chicken tortilla soup, not to mention rice and beans, chips and salsa, while the seafood was a bit more forgettable, even if it is quality. Don't think we'd been in a very, very long time.
