Laos
Breakfast at the Amari Vientiane was like many quality Asian hotels - pretty damned good. Spicy ground pork, catfish, dim sum, tofu soup, dragonfruit, and many other tasty things. Couldn't resist the moo ping (pork skewers) or the pork chop either. And properly rested and refreshed, exploring the Vientiane riverfront was much more appealing in the morning.
Left maybe 30 minutes too late to beat the heat, but it wasn't too bad. The amusement park on the riverbank was smaller than I expected, the statue to Chao Anouvong, the last king of the Kingdom of Vientiane, Ho Phrakeo museum and other temples/former temples were mostly as expected; some impressive, some smaller but still historic. Had I started my day a tad earlier, might have had time to do some more detailed exploration of some of the temples, or at least time to head over to Patuxai (the Victory Gate).
Quick hop back to the airport, only a smidgen of a delay on the return to Singapore, and that was it for Laos. Would have been nice to head up to Luang Prabang for more sightseeing, but with work calling, heading back was unfortunately the prudent thing to do. Have to say that the Embraer E190-E2 that Scoot used for today's return flight was not appreciably more comfortable than the Airbus A320ceo the day before, which both surprised me (due to the E2's reputation as a comfortable aircraft) and didn't surprise me (due to Scoot's reputation as an ultra-low-cost carrier).
Hit up the Staff Canteen at Terminal 1 on my arrival in to Changi Airport; to my disappointment, maybe half the stalls were closed for (early) dinner, the Chongqing chicken pot from the most popular stall open when I arrived was pretty disappointing. Wandered next door to Jewel Changi, where almost every restaurant was busy, had a pretty decent roast pork and roast duck at You Men HK Roast in the food court. Lavender Bakery had quite a crowd, their dan tat was pretty solid, while their croissant-style dan tat was pretty disappointing (custard not rich enough to match with the excessiveness of the crust). LeMa Dumpling, Mr. Coconut, OMEGA Pork Noodle, and several other places looked popular and tasty, but with only one stomach's worth of space, not able to try them all!
Noticed that the Disney collaboration is alive and well here, not only the traditional Mickey and Minnie, but Big Hero Six, and of course, Star Wars. Actually popped inside the Star Wars Library pop-up for a more through look; it was a bit small, but was nice to see it was an actual functioning library, and especially nifty it was dedicated to Star Wars.
