Tonchin LA
Returned to Tartine Santa Monica to try some of the cooked food items, not just the pastries of the previous visit. Turns out the breakfast sandwich, on a soft brioche bun and with a massive amount of folded egg, is pretty good, although a bit out of balance for my taste-- too much egg, not enough bacon. Still tasty and a solid experience if you're in the area, tho. And the vibe, being an old church combined with a beautifully modern display case full of tasty pastries, somehow finds a balance.
Tonchin LA for dinner is a bit more generic than the Manhattan location, and while the food is good, it didn't strike me as quite as good as the OG. Maguro tartare with romaine and lettuce to me seemed more like a rice-less hand roll and was pretty solid, pork dumplings were beautiful but the skins a bit too thick. And the appetizers worked well, but again, not particularly memorable.
