Breakfast at the Narita Tobu Hotel wasn't much better than dinner, but at least a Japanese breakfast fits in with the locale and the theme. They did some pretty customer-unfriendly stuff tho; Kathie left her key in her room and they wouldn't let her back in without an extra charge, and (I think) if you forgot your breakfast voucher, there was an extra charge for that too (which at least made a bit more sense). The gym also had very limited hours, which was annoying. Since it was rainy and windy outside, we opted to stay in the hotel until it was time to go to the airport-- and at least they had a spacious lobby for Kathie to wait in.
Ended up at Narita International Airport a bit earlier than usual in order to try and talk to United customer service again. With multiple non-stops from both Narita and Haneda to the USA, tried to get on NRT-LAX or HND-LAX instead of having to connect through SFO, but with nearly 250 passengers like me on yesterday's diversion, most of them in higher fare buckets than I was, ended up out of luck. Carl at least was placed on a non-stop to Newark (as EWR was his original destination) the night before, although he had to go through Haneda (at least all on United's dime). Before parting ways with Carl, ended up having a pretty decent soba and tempura lunch at the land-side Terminal 1 Food Court at NRT. Nagasaka Sarashina Soba was pleasantly available for an early lunch, although they got very busy by the time we left.
Said farewell to Carl, then back on a newly-repaired N36962 operating as UA 3024 for the (24 hours delayed) completion of the return trip to SFO. With a few passengers having found earlier flights home, was able to score an upgrade to Polaris, and hence able to take advantage of the one major plus of the diversion to Japan: the Japanese catering (yum!).
Had an uneventful return, although a second flight with a great crew is always a bonus. Final bonus was getting into SFO just early enough to hurry through immigration, customs, and security to make the earlier 10:30am return to Los Angeles instead of the originally scheduled 12:00pm return. Not bad. And always fun to have new adventures with Carl, Kathie, and my fellow frequent fliers.
