Over to Fairview Park to join a bunch of NASA volunteers and a ton of the community for the total eclipse. It was indeed everything as hoped and more-- 3 minutes and 50 seconds of darkness, the related temperature drop, and even with a thin layer of clouds in the way obscuring fine details of the corona, simple awe<.
Managed to setup the star tracker successfully in daylight for the first time as well, in retrospect should have taken video too; but still very pleased I was able to do that for the first time, too (and accurately enough for 700mm!). Quite a few solar prominences were easily visible as well, super cool. Erik, being smart, brought two cameras, and got some great shots too, particularly some landscape and people shots that I could not get with a 100-500L + 1.4x extender attached.
Dinner afterwards at Banter Beer and Wine, a Canadian restaruant with a solid beer and wine selection and an okay poutine (not sufficiently authentic according to Dawn). The food was distinctly modern American/Canadian, with a sliced brussels sprouts salad and medium-thick fries, plus a fairly forgettable cheeseburger with spam that oozed with potential but failed to excite. Still kind of a nice place to hang out, if only they can work on their poutine.
