Third Street Promenade
The old P.F. Chang's space on 3rd Street Promenade is now Lotus Dim Sum and Dumpling. Accidentially arrived right as the afternoon happy hour started (currently 2:00pm to 6:00pm), which was nice because even with happy hour pricing they're still on the expensive side. Not that I'm opposed to saving a dollar or two per dish.
The menu is surprisingly decent for westside dim sum, although they're also very much a fusion noodle place and a bar, which I guess makes sense given the clientele in the area. The dim sum itself is actually not bad, not memorable, but not awful or even bad-- which for westside/Santa Monica is a win. Have to give credit to the chicken feet which were, if a little light on seasoning, pretty good.
Duck Donuts a few blocks further down was in their soft opening. Being completely unfamiliar with them, I found the wait a bit long, but can write that off to soft opening training. Their location is the very front of Kitchen United Mix's food court complex, so will see how things go?
The donuts are served piping hot from the deep fryer, and at least to me, were overly sweet. They seemed too heavy for a raised donut but too light for a cake donut, the business later said they're cake donuts and you can "control sweetness" with the toppings you choose. Which might be obvious in retrospect but is not at all obvious in the menu, which mostly has a selection of house favorites and "fan favorites" that are mostly going to be very sweet-- too sweet for me.
