Azores
Never thought I'd be making a trip the Azores. At ~950 miles/~1,525km from the Portugese mainland, plus the fact that I'd previously spent a bunch of time in Portugal, going back to Portugal was not high on my priority list.
The unexpected addition of non-stop service from the USA, specifically Newark, NJ (EWR) to the Azores (PDL) made the trip too convienent to say no to!
Day 1 - United Airlines' inaugural flight from EWR-PDL, plus continued lousy weather causing delays all over the northeastern USA.
Day 2 - morning arrival at Joao Paulo II aeroporto on San Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal. Nearby Ponta Delgada and the big extinct volcano, Sete Cidades after landing.
Day 3 - sunny, windy days give way to volcanic beaches and a seafood dinner.
Day 4 - hiking PR 04 SMI - Mata do Canario - Sete Cidades, the Miradouro da Boca do Inferno viewpoint, and a much-delayed departure out of PDL.
Day 5 - a painfully short nap and a sunrise return home from EWR.
