Layers and layers of haze from all the forest fires kind of ruined the view at Monument Valley, two hours east of Page, but for John Wayne and fans of westerns, it was probably still an experience. For me, not quite as much-- but still fun to see all the plateaus and scenery that defined a generation of movies.
Desperately needed vegetables that weren't deep fried or coated in salad dressing so risked the local Chinese buffet back in Page. Was surprised that buffets had survived the pandemic and pleased that I did not die from the food. Broccoli beef, kung pao chicken, and some sort of mixed vegetables for me, plus the hot and sour soup-- well let's just say you don't generally screw that up too bad. The egg drop/corn/tofu soup, OTOH, was ... not good.
Wrapped up the night with a quick hike over to the Toadstools, which are barely a kilometer or so from the highway, and a surprisingly easy hike that even an idiot like me couldn't get too lost in. The night sky was brilliant just 30 minutes northeast of Page, with the galactic center even visible from the side of the freeway.
