Fooding roundup
Random bits of fooding. Poke Etc. is one of the few true Hawaiian-style poke places on the mainland. Overly salty or overly done in mayo, their poke was a disappointment-- but as one of the only real poke places around (and not one of the mainland abominations), might have to give them another try?
Dinner that night from Anzu. The kara age isn't as crispy/crumbly breaded as most others, it's more of a smooth breading. A little difference that ended up being quite acceptable. That said something about it didn't add up quite as nicely as Hurry Curry or Curry House.
A few days later, breakfast at Destroyer. Not just a savory waffle, but a delicious work of art. Sourdough sunchoke, creamed kale under the fried egg, pepper jelly, super thin country ham, pickled mustard. Was almost a shame to have to eat it! And a light oolong tea, combined with a bright, warm, sunny morning in Culver City. Wish I could do this every morning! (except I'd go broke...)
Then the day's first gimmick, Krispy Kreme's Mars Perseverance commemorative donut. It was waaaaaay prettier in the ad, the real thing was, as Krispy Kreme usually is, overly sweet and honestly disappointing. But it was still good to see a noted consumer brand geek out over science. The day's second (and thankfully last) gimmick, Chef Jhon Lee's Italian pepperonata and mozzarella dumplings with Go Go Gyoza. Pepperonata was surprisingly inoffensive, and it was just the tiniest hint of mozzarella, so it worked. But it was really more meh than anything, which is not something I can justify given they charge $15 a box for 12 dumplings.
