YESS Aquatic
One of Sam's favorite chefs, Junya Yamasaki-- famous for Koya in London-- is now in Los Angeles.
His YESS AQUATIC food truck, soon to be restaurant, is focused on local seafood, both in terms of sustainable sourcing as well as maximum freshness. The menu is supposedly yet to reach full flower, but it's already solid. And the location is super undistinguished, although it's at the very southern end of the very hipster Arts District.
The fish katsu sandwich was surprisingly light, perfectly deep fried, and full of flavor. The chips (err, french fries) were more soggy than crispy by comparison, but still tasty. Sashimi salad was modest-looking but actually quite ample, with a nice chili sauce and a substantial amount of veggies underneath that worked very well.
Finally, a few hours later, the sauteed fish curry saved for dinner was excellent. Again the fish really shined; the curry, while quite good, definitely has more competition here in Los Angeles. All in all, well worth the visit!
