Singapore: May 2019
Before heading into the third day... wrapped up a long two days with a midnight snack via all-air-conditioned access at the food court inside Marina Bay Sands Shoppes. Not much is open this late, but to be able to get fish soup at almost hawker stall prices without being soaked in sweat is a major win.
After a quick shower and a quicker nap, headed back up to the roof of the Marina Bay Sands for sunrise. Unfortunately the night's clouds and pouring rain left behind enough moisture in the air to spoil things. Still, you have to appreciate what nature gives you, and it was still a lovely view. Also to my surprise, the pool already had a decent crowd at such an early hour, although it was significantly less busy than the night before!
Caught a cab back to the airport, quickly and efficiently checked in and went through security, did a little last-minute shopping (sadly, didn't have time to shop many other places than at the airport on this trip, not with barely 14 hours on the ground), and then back into an airplane.
United does a good job at "average" on their ultra-long-haul flights. The Thai curry noodles the day before are probably their best regularly served main course, and even that isn't particularly memorable. The beef today is best described as something that keeps you alive, and the pre-arrival congee with duck was a pleasant surprise (faint praise?!). A bit of turbulence early on made lunch a little hard on the flight crew, although they still did a great job-- and perhaps to make up for the lousy sunrise, the wall of clouds that we emerged from during lunch was impressive.
The next flight to LAX was smooth, and they apparently just changed the menu at the Polaris Lounge. The bibimbap was a little bland but passable, while the lamb chops were overcooked and tiny. Definitely glad I got both dishes instead of just one!
