U2
Embarking on yet another round of U2 insanity with Pearl and Simon for the weekend. In true Pearl fashion, went straight from LAX to a midnight snack, and while we were not planning on tsukumen at Tsujita... well... there was no wait, so who were we to resist?
Next morning was dim sum with Mara, Kristina, Sue, and friends at NBC Seafood. Probably about the same quality as World Seafood, but much better parking. Wasn't planning on making it a duplicate of two weekends ago, but we hit Half and Half again too. So good! Then for a pre-show dinner, we stopped in Japantown... and got a little random as it was super busy, even for an early-ish dinner. Ended up at Oomasa for fairly decent sashimi and sushi-- just beat the rush as well, *whew.*
U2 went back basics for The Joshua Tree Tour. Just the band, no extras, no ensembles of volunteers on stage to emphasize human rights (RED, UNCHR, etc.), a massive joshua tree built into a very impressive wavy screen as the backdrop, and a modest secondary stage.
They went old school on the setlist as well, just music the first few songs, before kicking into all-new graphics for the rest of the set. Starting with Sunday Bloody Sunday, sans background, set the tone for the night-- so much energy! Beautiful Day (Youtube) in particular had a beautiful background, and both Miss Sarajevo and Mothers of the Disappeared were especially touching. The Salvation Army band got their time on the video screen as well, and the extended encore was a great way to end the show.
Did lunch the next day with Pearl, Simon, and Charles at The Pan. All kinds of pancakes and the loaded hashbrowns ensured full bellies, plus it was good to catch up with all of the latest Konami crew happenings. And suddenly, all too soon, it was time to send the Lai's back to the airport!
