150" of snow at the base, 300" of snow at the top in mid-May??!? Decided to take advantage of an amazing snow year with a long weekend in Mammoth.
They had so much snow they built a massive set of ramps on Solitude (off High Five Express), and the Unbound terrain park off Main Lodge was in full glory as well. The backside was still open, and the hiking we did at Earthquake Fault and Tamarack Lodge was still piled high with snow. Friggin' insane.
Even fresh snow (!) still falling as we left and lots of days relatively cool temperatures, they were still losing about 10" a week of base-- after all, it is almost summer. You could tell as conditions went from ice to slush as the day progressed, but they expected to be open through Independence Day or longer. (reports as of Memorial Day weekend were they would be open into August. Holy crap!)
Fooding included massive overkill at The Westin's happy hour (not bad at all) and at Mammoth Brewing (Gooseberry sour was not as good as hoped), as well as the usual Erick Schat's Bakkery stop in Bishop. Added in sandwiches piled high with meat at Mahogany Smoked Meats for good measure, and it was a great four days of skiing. Well, except for the bear getting into the car...
Wrapped things up with kbbq for dinner at Hanjip in Culver City before Mike and Lan Lan headed off. Their marinades appear to be sweeter than the norm for kbbq places, but it was still alright for a Korean place-not-in-ktown/Gardena/La Habra. Plus Lan Lan loved the kim chi fried rice.
