DK's Donuts for a mainstream take on creative donuts out of an unassuming strip mall in Santa Monica. 'cause more sugar is always good? *grins* They still do a cronut copy, only now they call it an o-nut or something different. Things seemed like a mix of decent and of overly sweet, and they do seem to like their nutella here. Honestly, DK's feels like a normal corner place you go for a good tasty regular glazed donut, as opposed to the high-end feeling of their more popular competitors.
Dinner at Bareburger in downtown Santa Monica. Tons of exotic meat options-- elk, bison, duck, wild boar, plus vegetarian options such as mushroom-lentil and black bean. Normal options such as turkey and beef as well. The duck burger let the natural flavor of the duck through nicely, although part of me kept wondering if this was the best way to appreciate duck (vs. the more traditional smoked, roasted, or whatnot...).
Three Twins Ice Cream for sea salt caramel plus cookies and cream in a waffle cone. Good, but again hard to say it truly stands out in a crowded field of gourmet ice cream options in Los Angeles. OTOH, their whole 5-star-ice-cream-atop-Mt. Kilimanjaro trip was definitely a standout option as far as being crazy!
