Sonoritas Prime Tacos
Yelp Elite event at Sonoritas Prime Tacos on Sawtelle. Modern as befits the new places on Sawtelle, and even more fitting for a hipster taco place in Los Angeles.
Non-alcoholic drinks were excellent, hotchata de pistache, agua de pepino con chia, and agua de jamaica. Wasn't as big a fan of the michelada tradicionale; maybe a different style than I was used to having in Peru and Central America.
Food wasn't bad, the guacamole had good sized chunks of avocado still in it, and the veggie taco was probably the best option. BBQ rib and the al pastor were both a tad sweeter than preferred, the carne asada was good but a few bits were too chewy. Something about tacos seems to get lose in translation when you leave a stall or a truck and go into a real restaurant... :-/
Dessert was entirely average, the red velvet churro was pretty dry and not all that red velvet (or chocolate) tasting. Flan was similarly ordinary; and the ice cream was served frozen solid. Disappointing considering the promise this place showed.
Rest of the event was just okay; felt like an enjoyable sit-down dinner. t'was hard to mingle with other tables as the space was pretty crowded, and there was a bit less involvement from Yelp staffers in stirring up the group than expected. Not sure how much of it was planned that way or just because the restaurant wasn't conductive to addressing the whole group at once. Overall, more ordinary than special a meal tonight.
