Micronesia: August 2015
Cheap flights and some free time, so why not take a few days to island hop the Pacific? What was originally supposed to be a very quick, very packed 3 day trip island hopping HNL-MAJ-KWA-PNI-TKK-GUM was turned into a slightly less quick 5 day trip thanks to a flight cancellation and reschedule by United. Have to say it worked out for the better in the end, as that meant time to actually see a few sights, eat a few meals, and sleep in a real bed in both Hawaii and in Guam.
Not many tourists do the full island hopper, either the one I did or the slightly longer HNL-MAJ-KWA-KSA-PNI-TKK-GUM offered on Mondays and Fridays. The reason is, it's a long day-- or three days, or more (!). 13+ hours on a cramped 737, plus you almost certainly have to lay over one night on each end to make your connections. Plus you then have to get back to wherever you came from, be it the Americas, Asia, or Australia. Even longer if you're from Europe!
If you're intrigued about it as I was (and many are on Flyertalk), it's a worthwhile experience, and it's not too painful if you can swing business class. Otherwise, I don't think I would recommend it...
Day 1 - flying in to a rainy Honolulu, plus overloading on desserts.
Day 2 - eating our way across Oahu, from malasadas to shaved ice to shrimp trucks to udon.
Day 3 - the whole point of the trip, the United Island Hopper, HNL-MAJ-KWA-PNI-TKK-GUM.
Day 4 - exploring Guam, particularly War In The Pacific Historical National Park and all the little beaches and inlets.
Day 5 - return via Tokyo's Narita International Airport.
