Dim sum with Frances, Patrick, and friends at Elite in Monterey Park. Elite used to be one of the top spots in years past, but they've clearly gone down a notch in both quality and consistency.
Food is still pretty darned good, but what was once nearly-perfect crystal-like har gow and cheung fun skins are now not nearly as good, marred with a bit of extra thickness and all too often, a hole or two (!).
Fried taro ball (yu jiao), pork spareribs (pai gut), dan tat, and beef tripe are all still excellent, and as a rule it's still worth a visit. The wait wasn't too bad for nearly noon on a Saturday at just twenty minutes for our large-ish group, just remember to bring a sweater, because the large tables in the little greenhouse area always seem to be freezing.
