Chicago
Down to Chicago's little Chinatown for dim sum in the morning. Surprisingly decent quality at Minghin, although it doesn't match what we get in my usual haunts. Easy ride via the L, too.
Then back to the Hyatt Regency for all the sessions at AAG Annual Meeting. Some excellent ones by Cyrosphere/Polar Geography as well as CyberGIS, as well as some less-consistent ones by CyberGIS and a few other groups. Sometimes it's hard to tell how good/relevant a session is from the names, probably more my fault (lack of understanding) than anything else. Spent some serious time in the exhibit hall as well, talking a bit to Exelis, ESRI, HERE, and some other groups.
Would've loved to talk more to Google about Earth Engine, as well as some smaller groups/vendors (t'was very surprised to see UC Davis with a table!), but sadly ran out of time, as it was then time to head to a dinner of deep dish pizza at Lou Malnati's.
We beat the rush with our slightly early arrival, and found that even if deep dish is not your thing, it's still worth a try when you visit Chicago. We had a good sized group with Sara, Sarah, Frank, Heather, Andrew, Luis, and myself, allowing us to order the full gamut of pizzas. Cheese and sausage were actually pretty good, have to try pepperoni next time...
The UCLA AAG Party closed out the night. A substantially more modest affair than the ridiculously awesome one had a few years ago in Los Angeles (at Perch), this one attracted a crowd of mostly UCLA Geographers and affiliates, including quite a few of Professor Glen MacDonald's old students, many of whom are Geographers with established careers in their own right. UCLA Geography Professor Emeritus Nicholas Entrikin and William A. V. Clark both made it as well-- it added up to a very a respectable crowd!
