Cousin Kristen and her husband Dave arrived early, then Ray dropped in unexpectedly, so what the hell, why not head to King Hua for dim sum, the new Alhambra location of Blockheads Shavery for shaved snow, and some of Kristen's tasty cooking?
King Hua was on one of the 10 best dim sum lists a year or two ago... sadly it seems like, along with 888 Seafood, they may be going downhill? Gai lan, har gow, har cheung fun were all still pretty good, but the pai gut (pork spareribs) were so-so and the tripe could've been better. Shu mai weren't too bad either, but the pei dan sau yuk jook was pretty awful, and the deep fried taro cake is still a little odd.
Blockheads' recent expansion appears to be going well. The Alhambra location is in an okay spot (assuming it's legal to park in the structure behind them, I think is?) and the shaved snow is quite good. The location is a bit loud inside due to the concrete and cinder block, but it's larger than the Sawtelle location, which is nice. About the only weakness was the lack of fresh strawberries, but maybe that's a seasonal thing?
Kristen apparently had a serious desire to cook, and she whipped up an elaborate meal of Peruvian style chicken, a spicy green salad dressing, and potatoes. The Nom Nom Paleo book that Aunt Pattey got for everyone was put to good use! Too bad only a few more of the family made it, but it was good to see everyone!
