Flores and The Ladies Gunboat Society
Fancy-ish southern food seems to be the best way to describe Flores and The Ladies Gunboat Society.
The previous occupant of the space, Sawtelle Kitchen, was also a little fancy and had a bit of kitsch, but this place does a southern spin that's both tasty and rich, with a menu that changes daily, so much that Yelp reviews gave us relatively little clue on what would be good!
Raw oyster selection was surprising in its quality, and the potato bread was soft on the inside, just enough of a crust on the outside to be almost amazing. The duck fat fries were overrated, and the pasta with rabbit was just okay. Quality pasta, but shredded/braised rabbit wasn't as good as hoped. And the rotisserie chicken, while tasty, had triple the salt it needed. Ugh.
t'was a shame, but it didn't really matter, the rest of the food was so good. Ophelia and the rest loved the braised shortrib, the polenta was so rich I think Michelle and Sue might've had heart attacks, and the desserts were excellent. Ginger ice cream and raspberrry sorbet, when eaten together, is a combination I would never have thought of, and the pudding cake was its equal in tastiness.
Expensive enough that I'm not sure I'd go again, but considering how creative they get with the menu, it's definitely a tasty and enjoyable meal.
