Mama Hong's
The old Pho 99 on Wilshire Blvd. closed and reopened a few (long) months later as Mama Hong's. Evidently Mama Hong's is a chain of some sort, but the advantage is, the food is surprisingly good.
Keep in mind that this isn't going to compare to Westminister or Garden Grove standards, but by west LA standards, the pho was quite solid, the beef stew wasn't bad (although get it with rice, not bread the next time), and the nem nuong spring rolls (grilled pork patty) were more than just edible, they were actually the first nem nuong I've had outside of Westminister and Garden Grove that might actually be considered good. (!)
Don't get too excited-- an average place in Garden Grove is definitely better than the best day at Mama Hong's, but still, this place was a refreshing surprise compared to literally every other Vietnamese food experience on the westside.
