UCLA vs. Memphis
Unexpectedly ended up around the corner from China Red, one of LAist's favorite places. The wait wasn't too bad-- the parking lot is clearly sized to be an exact fit for the restaurant-- and the food was pretty good.
Shu mai were decent, even good, but not quite excellent. Ditto for the beef tripe, which was good but lacking in presentation and in cut (t'was a bit... flat). Pei dan jook was similar-- a little short of greatness (was a little too watery), but the flavor was good, and it was loaded with pork. Har gow were excellent, even better when reheated later, and the har cheung fun were almost excellent-- just right skins and shrimp, but the bit of bitter melon in each was a little strange.
Quite good for dim sum, but given that there's other places of similar quality (and the same in price) closer, it's hard to justify the extra distance.
UCLA vs. Memphis later that night. Ugly, ugly game, but at least it was a win (42-35 UCLA). UCLA's offense was decent enough in spite of decidedly average running backs and some dropped passes that shouldn't have been dropped. And the defense, which looked decent enough previously, was awful looking til the 4th quarter. Secondary was horrible, and the defensive line wasn't aggressive enough... all of what, one sack in two games?
Still, a win's a win. Hope UCLA puts together a solid game next week against Texas. GO BRUINS.
