After hanging out with Nik, Amy, and Baby Kai in the morning, it was off to Berkeley and The Greek Theater there for more Postal Service!
Driving to the parking lot, we see a huge line waiting to get in. Good thing we're early, 'cause those lines are already long! We park for free (cross-parking privileges FTW!), get in line, and quickly enough, get in and secure a spot among all the youngsters here on the floor near the front. Some so-so Korean beef tacos and an opening act later (Baths = started good, quickly became terrible), things got better-- the second act, Divine Fits, were actually pretty talented.
Then, packed in with all the youngin's here, Ben Gibbard, Jimmy Tamborello, Jenny Lewis, and Laura Burhenn came on, and the whole venue started singing with them. It rocked.
Same setlists as before, not as much getting close to the crowd (probably for the cameras), same performance pretty much with the same transitions, heck they wore the same outfits every show, but something about being in this kind of crowd rocked hard, and it was awesome.
Hearing Clark Gable, Such Great Heights, and Brand New Colony is waves of delight, then the encore into This Is The Dream of Evan and Chan makes much more sense the third time around, and finishing with Brand New Colony is epic. Pure, pure delight. Worth all the time, all the trouble, to see Postal Service just one more time.
Wandered into Berkeley proper afterwards, found a new Sheng Kee Bakery (I wish we had one of those when we were in college!) for delicious Chinese goodies, the crazy line at the so-so clone of Diddy Riese (what the heck is CREAM?), and of course, a slice of cheap pizza at Fat Slice before heading home... not quite like the college days, not with the crazy club-style line at an empty bar on Telegraph, but it was kind of quaint to be back, even for just a few hours.
