Coachella
Friday felt like Britpop night, Saturday just looked like hell. Two Door Cinema Club, Franz Ferdinand, and Moby all on at the same time? Phoenix, Sigur Ros, and New order at the same time?!?! DAMN YOU COACHELLA!
Friday was a relatively cool 89F compared to 94F the rest of the weekend. We walked around a bit, checked out all the animal avatars and the crowds under the "tents" making up the Do Lab, heard a bit of Violent Femmes, rocked out to Bingo Players in the Sahara tent, and finally went inside Yuma tent to hear Jason Bentley spin. Friggin' deafening in there, but felt more like a club, almost relaxing if you could stop noticing your entire body going THUMPTHUMPTHUMP.
Pink's Hot Dogs for dinner, suffered through Hot Chip (they were okay) in order to get a good spot for the whole reason to come: POSTAL SERVICE!!
Postal Service clearly isn't a touring band (heck they're barely a side gig) and it shows, but it was sooooooo good to see them live, to hear the crowd singing along, to hear Jenny Lewis and Ben Gibbard's duet in Nothing Better, to hear the live electronic beeps and boops added for some of the songs... so good!
Leaving Postal Service after they were done, we realized the crowd was much smaller on Friday than it was today. It was mobbed. Utterly insane. Snacked at the Terrace food area again, from which Franz Ferdinand drew us in. They've improved a lot in the past few years, and put on good, solid, proper rock show. Pretty damned good. New Order was next, and unlike some other recent shows, they mixed it up, with the first seven songs all pretty much being mainstream classics. We tried to leave to make it to Phoenix, but True Faith came on-- only after it finished were we able to tear ourselves away!
Never did make it to Two Door Cinema Club or The xx, but caught the last few songs of Phoenix, which was again pretty awesome. They too had the main stage packed as we caught 1901, then the encore of Rome, Countdown, and Entertainment. Too bad we missed Lisztomania, but that had to do-- couldn't be in two places at once!
