Mammoth: January 2011: Trip 1: Day 2
Micah turned Altara's leftovers into a yummy breakfast, backed with freshly-heated Schat's pecan pullaways and then delicious ham sandwiches for lunch...
Then we hauled butt over to the Village Gondola and to Canyon Lodge, where we spent most of the day running around Canyon Lodge and Eagle Lodges' vast array of runs. Richocet off Cloud Nine Express, Spook, Haven't the Foggiest, and Back For More off Chairs 22 and 25, plus whatever the heck else it was we went down. It was quite a bit, as Dan and I are both intimately familiar with Mammoth and can almost run around the place blindfolded. The tons of snow also made normally treacherous runs such as Richocet somewhat lese treacherous-- not that they were easy!
Ended the day an hour or two early, actually... on the way to lunch at Eagle Lodge we were within sight of the lodge when Dan cut down a little dip we'd done zillions of times.
And then he ate it hardcore. Faceplant! Landed on his camera to cushion himself... right the solar plexus. Ouch.
Turns out the dip we went down, right on his line, had an additional tiny dip right on his path. I was off to the left and would've been fine, except when I saw Dan go over his tips I slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting him. Micah, wisely, went around and got to watch Dan lay on the ground in pain for a few minutes while he recovered his wind.
Naturally that cut things a bit short, even with the addition of beer over lunch to help things. That also reaffirmed my committment to take the little camera with me on the slopes, and not the dSLR-- especially since my dSLR is about twice the weight of Dan's.
Wrapped the day up with Dan's pasta, a round of Pandemic (went quite well!), and wandering down to the Village to the new Hyde Lounge to watch the game and play with Dan's new Sigma 8mm/3.5 fisheye lens.
