V Lounge
The Tastymeat! truck serves Mediterranean stuff-- almost Greek, with two kinds of shawarma, plus feta cheese fries and other good things. Sadly the shawarma was pretty underwhelming and fries with feta... are fries with feta. Tasty-but-you-know-they're-not-worth-a-heart-attack... they were so greasy they soaked through the box. Yikes. Verdict: meh. Much potential, but not there yet.
Chego for dinner: the malasadas continue to be so-so compared to the real thing, but tasty enough to buy. Til this time; these were raw inside. Eeek! The Wintertime in Palms is a special: beef, persimmion, mandarin oranges, and brussel sprouts. It's actually pretty good, but compared to a regular menu item, the prime rib beef bowl... it's a poor second. Maybe Chego's food is just too awesome for their own good!
Backed Chego up with a visit to Scoops' new Westside location, a block away from Chego. Same awesome ice cream, same low-rent understated-yet-slightly-cheesy decor... but being brand-new, it has no character at all. We weren't too worried about it though, character only comes with time...
Finally, tried to go bar hopping with Virgil and Rani later that night. Room in Santa Monica is supposed to be a small yet awesome place that had yet to be discovered, said Yelp reviews. We got there... and the crowd waiting to get into the place was bigger than the place was inside. And the line wasn't moving. No thanks! We headed to V Lounge instead, which seemed a little empty (always concerning!) but started picking up later, and was packed by midnight.
Sort of sleek and modern inside, V Lounge kept us happy with pretty decent house and top 40's, plus they were well stocked with Patron. Nothing fancy or spectacular, but certainly entertaining enough for a last-minute unplanned night out! Now only if they could've turned the A/C up...
