China 2010: Day 7: Guangzhou
Off to Guangzhou! French toast for breakfast? (sorta. still awful). And... they had Thanksgiving the night before? We skipped it-- thankfully-- as that sounded kinda scary. Random stop by a truck stop to gas up the bus (another part of the experience!), then off to Guangzhou!
Martyrs Memorial Park and some of the Pan-Asian Games sights (well, drove by), more lunch, and then the Chen Family Temple, an extremely elaborate temple that far exceeds the modest expectations that "Family Temple" connotes! Elaborate carvings in both wood and ivory, the roof was ornate, the grounds themselves were decent enough considering they were overrun by tourists and locals alike...
We wandered over to our first (ordinary) hotel of the trip, the Landmark Canton, and then did a very odd meal of jook (congee). Jook itself is normally delicious, but this was a little too seafoody with all the courses they threw into it. Clams and fish, then chicken, then... They basically treated jook like hot pot broth... might have worked out better if they'd skipped the seafood.
After dinner the tour took us on an evening river cruise of the Pearl River, full of lights and everything. t'was kind of like a minature version of the lights on Hong Kong Harbor, but not nearly as cool (yet they put so much work into it!).
