Triple-packed Saturday
Step 0: sleep through the morning, skipping the Cadillac Culinary Challenge and Hyundai Sonata test drive events (yes I skipped TWO events). Very sad, but I was pooped, and I knew I'd need sleep to survive the rest of the day...
Step 1: Long Beach Marathon pre-race expo. Picked up my bib and race packet, ended up distracted at Road Runner Sports by their $50 shoe sale (wooohoo! success!) and some other stuff, and just barely met with Amy as she arrived from out of town to pick up her bib and packet.
Step 2: couldn't hang out with Amy long 'cause I had to run back to UCLA for the UCLA Geography department new graduate student BBQ. It's one of our few big department events, and since I hadn't made previous years, well, I had to show up. Not to mention Chase retired this year and hence we had no one else to take photos! Not a whole lot of faculty made it, but enough did, plus a ton of the grad students. We got to BBQ on a HUGE grill too, big enough to fit an entire bag of charcoal all at once. I think my arm hairs got a little singed while manning the grill due to the intense heat.
t'was a fun event, even if the fields at Sunset Recreation Center (aka Sunset Rec) were a little muddy from the rain. Clearly Americans are not as good as building fields as the Incas in Peru. =P
Step 3: Simon's birthday! Did some chauffer duty, then off to Simon and Pearl's (and Chris') place with Alicia and the rest of the crowd to celebrate. Pizza and board games and Def Jam Rock Star (for the karaoke/Rock Band/Guitar Hero fans). Good times! Amy picked up Nik and they both made it too... then 'cause Amy and I had a race the next morning, some of us had to end things early to go run 13.1 (or 26.2, for Amy) miles about 9 hours later...
t'was a fun, if crazy day. Happy Birthday Simon!
