UCLA Geography: von Humboldt colloquium
UCLA Geography's annual von Humboldt colloquium and dinner, with guest speaker, Professor Michael Watts (UC Berkeley), delivering a lecture on oil and insurgency in the Niger delta in Africa.
Formally titled African Cosmos: Geographic Reflections on Insurgency and Rebellion, Professor Watts is an engaging, expressive speaker who is one of the world's foremost experts on Africa. He is also an exhaustive speaker, running nearly 30 minutes over time, into the post-talk Evergreen, which got cut a little short as we all headed up the hill to Covel Commons for dinner and awards.
Awards went to outstanding grad students, the outgoing department chair, Professor Rigby, and other major contributors. Post-dinner drinks were at the Gas Light in Santa Monica.
