New York 2008: Day 3: Long Island
As usual on my trips to New York, we generally spend one day doing necessary errands for Joel's continued existence as a Hofstra Law student. Best Buy, the mall, etc. We tried to stop by Minado for a sushi buffet lunch, but they were closing by the time we arrived due to battling the customer service lines at Best Buy.
That worked out, though. Five Guys is sort of the East Coast take on a cheap fresh burger, a psuedo-equivalent to the West Coast In-n-Out. It's different, not even close. Burgers aren't as fresh and tasty and the fries, my goodness, are completely different. In-n-out is fresh cut potatos fried to about a light-medium. Five Guys is fresh cut potatos in larger strips fried to crispy death and salted into some very different but also delicious artery-clogging amount-- with a large fries taking an entire paper lunch bag filled to the brim. Plus you can get bacon. And there's free peanuts everywhere. It lacks the refinement and simple focus of In-n-Out (did I just call In-n-Out refined?) and to me isn't nearly as good, but it's got its own specific charm all the same. And it is tasty. Just not as tasty as In-n-Out.
Actually maybe Five Guys is a better comparison to Fatburger. More menu options, bigger, more greasy fries... that may be the better comparison to make!
Thought about wandering to the beach afterwards, but thunderstorms made that seem like a bad idea, so we sat inside, played Street Fighter II on the SNES, discovered Joel's Final Fantasy III cartridge was forgetting its saved games (NOOOO!!), said hi to Jessica and to Parker, then indulged in beer and pizza from the local joint down the street. Joel even got some studying done, in spite of the power going out for more than a few minutes.
(Yes, it rained and had quite a bit of lightning and thunder. Very glad we did not go to the beach...)
