SSC Holiday Party
Social Sciences Computing (SSC)'s Holiday Party 2007, held on one of the Hornblower yachts in Marina Del Rey.
We were on a boat dating from 1918 or so-- the Zumbrota was built for Charls Ringling (Ringling Bros. circus, anyone?)-- that was beautifuly restored and fit the 50 attendees we had perfectly. Aside from the low ceilings, of course-- Bethany's husband and a few other tall people had close calls. Even people of average height-- i.e. me-- were constantly worried!
Needless to say, the captain of the Zumbrota is a short man. =P
The dinner cruise was fun. No dancing, but the food was surprisingly decent and people socialized pretty well. The fact that it was fairly cool outside didn't stop people from going up to the top deck to enjoy the view, although there wasn't much to see aside from the marina. I'm spoiled by my previous experience in San Francisco, where you pass under the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridge, and you get to see Angel Island and Alcatraz. Far more exciting than the marina!
We had quite a few of our student consultants with us, so maybe they're not quite as spoiled by good food and better views. *grins*
