Hiking San Gabriel Peak/Mt. Disappointment
Straightforward, simple hike. 7 miles round trip, 1400' elevation gain, says the Trails of the Angeles (8th ed) guidebook. Slight detour to Mt. Disappointment after you descend from San Gabriel Peak's highest point, 1/4 mile extra up the fire road to the old Nike Missile battery.
Reality is, the beginning is pretty steep. Kicks your butt up the switchbacks, rising probably 600' of the 1400' elevation gain very quickly, then the rest is pretty easy. Detouring to Mt. Disappointment is an extremely steep 1/4 mile of road that is not something to take lightly; it's not bad but it's a lot of effort despite the short distance.
Started at 9am, I think. Hit San Gabriel Peak just before 10:30am. Mt. Disappointment about 25 minutes later. Then made it back down-- running-- at 11:30am. Crazy. Even had time for a dim sum detour in Monterey Park on the way back home...
