Swingfish
Sometimes my judgement fails me, particularly in areas such as "getting up early on Saturday morning," because of the (often) conflicting desires to "have fun on Friday nights."
Swingfish is a new swing dancing venue right in West Los Angeles. I was expecting something like Lindygroove in Pasadena, which is well-established and packed with people. Instead, I found it was a much smaller venue with much fewer people. Completely incompetent newbies like me had fewer people to hide behind (although Kevin, Grace, Sophia, Carley, and Jian-hui did a good job of it) as well as fewer really-super-good people to intimidate them. The crowd here seemed to be a bit older as well, with more examples of actual adults compared to twenty-somethings than at Lindygroove. Sophia mentioned that this is a brand-new venue, and with UCLA out of session, things will probably be different come September.
It looks like everyone had lots of fun. Jian-hui clearly remembered a great deal more from her previous swing dancing experience than she she was worried about. Carley spent lots of time swinging her pant legs, while Sophia simply didn't get much rest sometimes! (three long songs in a row for her... wow!) And as usual, Kevin and Grace are just way too good.
