Independence High class of 1998
December 26, 2002, at On the Border in McCarthy Ranch (Milpitas, CA). Thanks to Kim and Rikki for putting this all together! Roughly 20 or so Independence High School graduates from the class of 1998 got together for dinner and drinks, some for the first time in nearly five years. Some of us are still in college, some have graduated and are working, some are doing post-grad work... a few are married (!)... and we talked about other friends and classmates who couldn't be there, either because it's been hard to get in contact with them or there just wasn't time to inform them about this event on such short notice. What we see now isn't the same as what many of us expected to see back in 1998. The ideal high school picture of going to college and graduating in four years was never the case for many of us, and others- even the most dedicated, intelligent, and hard-working ones- found that their goals changed; graduate work was to enter the picture or other priorities in life were to change. The world expanded beyond high school. Considering that many of us were the "elite", the top 10%, 5%, or even 1% of students at our high school, maybe we haven't done as well for ourselves as we should have. Or maybe we've done better than everyone else expected. Who knows. It's not a question I'm interested in asking. It seems like most of us have found our way post-high school, and that said, things look pretty good for most of us. Who was there... Rikki Nunn, Kim Le, Dung Ngo, Greg Huang, Jimmie Bannister, Winston Liaw, Christine Liu, Holly Lee (Chau?), Karen _?_, Lawrence _?_, Ricky Tam, Justin Lanska, Sweeny (?), Nam _?_, Peter _?_, Jason _?_, Nellie (someone's GF, NOT an IHS grad)... (I know I'm missing names and have misspelled other names. Please let me know what kind of corrections I need to make. Thanks!) What'd we do... eat, talk, explore the last five years of everyone's lives to varying depths... then we drifted off. A few looked at my photo archives- specifically Kim, Rikki, and Greg- after dinner, then we went back on to our daily lives. Hopefully we'll be organized enough to pull this off again. They're definitely fun once in a while!
