Erasure in London

Currently playing: Erasure - Ship of Fools

Oh, how I wish I was there... yesterday marked Erasure's last scheduled London appearance of their The Other Tour. *sigh* It's been a good, busy time over here in Los Angeles, though, so no regrets... just wishes!

Funny story...

Michael Jordan tried to steal my date! I've never heard of the Washington City Paper, but it's a hilarious story... thanks to Barry for the link.

One more thing...

Before I added the MT code, this site validated as XHTML 1.0 strict. The CSS had a few issues though.

WOOHOO! Yes, I'm pathetic, but this is one of the first times that W3C compliant code has made it through my production process.

Well almost made it. I'll know more this weekend when I finish the bloody thing... MT's sample stuff is all XHTML 1.0 transitional rather than the XHTML 1.0 strict I'm using, so things could be rather broken again...

Posted by brian at 11:56 AM | Comments (2)

Comments...

Comments are still partially broken.

They work fine but don't display properly. You have highlight the entire window first before they'll display. I suspect it's because I have yet to configure my comments template properly to work with my personal site template, rather than MT's default template.

Site is still ugly too. I'm still refining and expanding my CSS, and things are growing as necessary to fit MT's additional features.

Stupid song is stuck in my head... grrrr!!

I took the money, I spiked your drink
You miss too much these days if you stop to think.

...
In the garden I was playing the tart
I kissed your lips and broke your heart.
You, you were acting like it was the end of the world.

...
In my dream, I was drowning my sorrows
But my sorrows they'd learned to swim
Surrounding me, going down on me

I can't even remember all the lyrics... just most of them.... aaaarrrrgggghhhhhh...

Ok ok ok back to work... I'm actually in class right now. o_O

We give thanks to those who have fallen in service to our nation.

The expected order of events for my weekend got rearranged today. Some stuff that should have been done today will instead be done tomorrow, and some stuff has already been done rather than being put off til tomorrow... My apologies, especially to my Ars Technica brethen, for any inconveniences this may have caused.

As for me, I'm going to go collapse into bed now and try to be productive as long as I can on this Monday...

I've found another one.

Hooray!!! I think, anyway. They are indeed quite rare, although I tend to find another new one at least twice a year... so I guess they're not really rare, but the sense of personal accomplishment at personally finding another one is still worthy of comment!

Plus today is SoCal-SERCA at Streets of Willow Springs #6. *sigh* And I can't go. Too much else to do, plus it's money I don't have. Augh.

You are Neo, the chosen one, the slayer of agents
everywhere. A former nerd, you have evolved into quite a stubborn hero. Although Trinity is not that hot, at least you're
one of the few that can get some in the real world. You can stop bullets and you're immmortal; so what the hell are you going to do in Matrix: Reloaded?!

"Yeah. Wow, that sounds like a really good deal. But I think I got a better one. How about I give you the finger... and you give me my phone call."

Ever had a calm, easy, relaxed day where you hoped to get a little work done... then thrown the entire day upside down at 8:30am... then had a shot at calming the day back down at 1:30pm, but instead decided to "get a little work done" which took another five hours... combined with an additional two committments made today, just blew your whole week into a frantic tornado?

That was my day. Good to know a friend up in San Francisco didn't totally forget me, too (gee, thanks for not recognizing my phone number!). :-þ

moveabletype 2.63 is up and running... now to finish figuring out XHTML and CSS, and making this all work with moveabletype... moveabletype is pretty good about CSS, which means I don't have to hack anything... but I do need to figure out moveabletype, which is a whole lot more complicated than this simple use of blogger...

Oops. Did I screw myself? I shipped out those two harddisks today, packed in plastic clamshells from Seagate because I couldn't find any antistatic bags. (needless to say I found some, AFTER I had spent 15 minutes cutting the foam rubber blocks to fit the clamshells. *sigh* )

Hitachi/IBM is pretty strict on packaging. Here's hoping I didn't just screw myself... from Hitachi's site: Packaging that is not acceptable Do not use bubble wrap, Styrofoam peanuts, paper, padded shipping envelopes or non-approved plastic or Styrofoam clamshell containers.

Oh, one annoyance today in class... it's always there...

You've probably experienced it. There's the smart*ss people... but I'm talking about the idiots.

Small upper-division classes often work pretty well, the idiots don't get into them... but almost always, someone who's just knowledgeable enough to be dangerous gets in. They can get into plenty of trouble, but not enough to get them out... and while they're getting into trouble, they're dragging the whole class down. It's even worse when they're loud and obnoxious about it. Sometimes you're fortunate, they don't drag the whole class down, but you still have to put up with the loser in every class. Generally they just annoy me and I tolerate it-- I've been clueless in classes on more than one occasion myself-- but when they're loud and obnoxious and annoying, even my tolerance can be tested.

Larger classes tend to hide these people in the crowd, which is ok. I've got several small upper division classes this quarter... unfortunately, it's not the "knowledgeable enough to be dangerous" who bug me... but I've got a few totally clueless idiots to deal with, too. For some reason there was no enforced prequisite for any of my classes this quarter, and only one had "requiste" or "recommended" classes for it. As a consequence, a few total idiots snuck in. One of my classes is a software based class. Plenty in the class aren't too familiar with computers, but most took the (non-enforced) prequiste and can find their way around. Some screaming and frustration but things do get done, and they ask the right questions to get ahead. Then there's the idiots.

The professor went over basic windows operations the first day of class. Combined with your presumed familiarity with the software package we're using, you should at least have a clue on how to use the mouse, load notepad, Internet Explorer, Windows Explorer, etc. Nope, the idiots are still lost. Ever want to shoot someone for being stupid? Ever wonder how these idiots are going to pass the course, when, halfway through the course, the idiot asks a really basic question, and even the professor-- who's normally quite helpful-- responds "you should know this already"... ouch.

I realize I'm not the best student. I also realize I'm trying hard to get the most out of my classes, or at least the most I know how to get out of my classes. I also realize I'm a geek, and that my tolerance for computer-idiots is occasionally stretched very thin.

This quarter started out looking pretty good... hopefully it'll continue that way, and I won't accidentially kill any idiots out of frustration...

Ugh... too tired to do anymore work on my website tonight. Went rock climbing with Sophia today at Wooden... we're both about 5.8~5.9 skill level climbers, with Sophia being more consistently a 5.9 than I am. We both had a great session today-- UCLA Rock Wall staff have been putting up a lot of new tracks lately. "Homo Topic" and "Zuma" are two 5.9's that have consistently been giving us trouble, and we both conquered both tracks today. WOOHOO!

Also they published two spreadsheets of climbs and tracks today, for roped climbs and boulder problems respectively. Turns out there's a ton of 5.9 tracks laid out right now-- 11 of them! We've done about half of them as well as all the 5.8's and below, I think. We should both theoretically be able to do any 5.9 climb... we'll see if we can prove that theory or not. I know for both of us there is one climb that has been impossible since it was put up in January... and for me, a climb put up last month looks impossible too, because my fingers literally are too long to grip the handholds.

Note to self: need better upper-body strength!

XHTML 1.0 and CSS 2.0 work started tonight. Things look pretty good, I'm beginning to appreciate the full abilities of XHTML and CSS... yet I'm barely scratching the surface. Finishing by this Friday might happen, or it might not, depending on how ambitious I get. If anything I'll get my primary pages migrated, and leave the old gallery/computers pages as is... just the new ones will be transferred over to version 0.6 of brian1.net. I can definitely finish by Friday if I retain blogger, if I transfer over to moveabletype then I don't know, since I haven't touched moveabletype in a few months...

Ever been looked at like you're psycho when you tell someone that your car is broken again?

I'm getting that waaaaay too often these days. Crazy Los Angeles people aren't used to seeing people working on their cars themselves.

Naturally, I don't use a $60,000 Mercedes to drive back and forth to the grocery store and the shopping mall either. (stupid rich idiots, but hell if they want to buy a Mercedes, go right ahead...)

Instead, I use a $14,000 vehicle with 82,000 miles on it. I take it to the racetrack. I beat the snot out of it. I get 8~10mpg during those 20 minute sessions at 6000rpm on the track. Of course I expect my car to develop problems from such hard use. Sheesh, what do you think I am, normal? hahahahahaha!!

Things are moved over to Addaction.net now. Re-uploading the gallery... about halfway through the upload, 2247 files uploaded to the gallery alone...

DNS was changed in the evening, hopefully by tomorrow evening everyone will be accessing this site again through its proper URL.

I may try to abuse myself and implement XHTML-strict and moveabletype this Friday, we'll see. I'm tempted to try the conversion tomorrow night, actually, but another marathon 9 hour coding session might not be the best idea... keep in mind it may not happen. I have 1GB of space to play with though, how can I resist??

Apologies for the lack of updates. My host, The Web Host, is shutting down May 10. I'm currently looking for a new host and hope to get the transfer done sometime today. Unfortunately this means my planned redesign may not happen tomorrow-- there's just not enough notice. I may try, but I can't guarantee it. If the choice is between uptime/current side and downtime/redesign, I'll stick with uptime.

I'm currently looking at Addaction and Unitedhost.co.uk. Addaction is cheaper for their 15GB/month bandwidth account and gives more space so I'm inclined to go with them, but Unitedhost seems to have better ratings on Webhosting Talk forums.
